The ICS experience.

About a few weeks ago, a group of young people were seen in the country filled with looks of great expectation of adventure since most of them were coming to Nigeria and indeed Africa for the very first time.

Now, this is not unusual for foreigners to be seen in the country, but these ones were peculiar. They were here to work without pay, and to live in homes far away from home.

These young foreigners were being paired with young Nigerians who would be their new family for about twelve weeks. Over that period, they would work in local communities organizing workshops and development trainings for villagers.

In the towns where they work, it is easy to spot them with their shiny red helmets which they carry around. They also carry ready smiles and matching personalities!

Always wanting to try out new things, these volunteers live for the experience and thrill that comes with their new environment.

So whenever you see the Oyinbo's, dont hesitate to be nice to them. Help prove that Nigeria is indeed a warm and peaceful country filled hardworking and energetic people.

ICS (International Citizen Service) is a programme which enables young people from the UK to spend 12 weeks overseas working on selected development projects alongside in-country national volunteers. The scheme is supported by the UK government's Department for International Development and is provided by VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas), an international development charity, whose goal is a world without poverty.
